Let me start by saying this. When it comes to thinking about putting the toilet seat down, I doubt that many men are as thoughtful about it as me. If I raise the seat, it gets placed down when I am finished. Without fail. Now having said that shall begin my little essay.
Why is it that women insist that the toilet seat be put down? Women are so adamant about this point that there are seats that automatically lower themselves when flushed. Of course the argument is that since they have to sit down every time, they don’t want to fall into the bowl. This is certainly understandable, but I believe that the responsibility should not be solely placed on the men.
There are times when one, whether male or female, must sit down to use the toilet in its intended way. Men, living in the absence of cohabitating women, will typically leave the seat up as it is more convenient. When they need to use the toilet in its other configuration they simply lower the seat before use. This makes sense. In today’s society where it is assumed that women are just as capable as men in all tasks (excluding perhaps the proper use of a toilet from a standing position) it is unthinkable that a woman is incapable of this feat. It only takes a simple one-second glance to determine whether it is in its home position, or the more dubious raised position, and no more than five seconds to lower the seat, for a maximum delay of six seconds. A large delay could come from having the door closed to the bathroom.
Why then must the responsibility of the seat position be placed solely on the man? One can certainly see the absurdity of men complaining that the seat has been left down, requiring them to raise it. If recognizing that the seat were down was such a problem then there would be more complaints from women sitting in a puddle of urine on the seat.
So ladies, the next time you find that your cohabitating male has left the toilet seat up, instead of yelling at him the next time you see him, ask yourself would you rather be sitting in a puddle of urine, and then take the 6 seconds to lower the seat. Afterward you might want to be courteous and leave it in its full and upright position.
