Yesterday we went to see The Illusionist. I had not seen much on it, and what I did see didn’t seem all that interesting. After seeing it, I can definitely say that it is one of the best pictures of the year. I was very surprised. The story is a take off of the classic, Romeo and Juliet Edward Norton plays Eisenheim the Illusionist, a brilliant stage magician, who after years of separation is reunited with from his childhood sweetheart Countess Sophie, played by Jessica Biel to find that she is to be married to the emperor’s son (Rufus Sewell). After getting wind of their relationship, the crown prince sends his Chief Inspector (Paul Giamatti)to investigate this magician and close him down, and in the process they develop an odd sort of friendship.
This movie really is a refreshing offering from Hollywood. While the plot has been done before, rarely has it been done this masterfully. Norton and Biel really had excellent chemistry. Edward Norton done some great subtle acting, which really shows his talent, and he looks natural with the slight of hand. Giamatti really makes this movie for me (despite the fact that I have a hard time not seeing him as Pig Vomit). The movie was the realization of a brilliant vision, without big effects or spectacle (other than the wonderful magic acts that he performs, which were beautiful and never explained). If you are observant you will be able to stay one step ahead of the plot, but you really have to watch for the sleight of hand. I was able to do just than, and despite that, I loved it.
If you are reading this, please do yourself a favor, and forgive this poor review and see this movie. You will not regret it.
