This past Thursday, Dana invited Bionca and I to go with her and John to see the Presidents of the United States of America, at the House of Blues.  I was really excited because I loved them back in high school, but I had not heard from them in a while, and looked forward to seeing what they have been up to, and to hear some new tunes.  We got there a little later than I would have liked, since we had to wait for Dana and JT to get the tickets, but we were able to still catch most of the opening act.

When we came in there was three guys on stage (Jeffrey Lewis and the Jackals) and they were playing what sounded to be pretty hard-core punk.  I was enjoying it, but I didn’t pay much attention as we were looking for a place to set up.  As we settled to a location and started paying attention.  Right away we started to realize that the band on stage was a bit different.  It was hard to pin them down with a genre, but the closest that I can come is folksy punk, since they ranged between them, and a little into rockabilly.  The lyrics were whimsical, and their style sort of geeky.  One of the best things that they did was when they showed two of their “low budget films,” which were basically sideshows accompanied by song performance.

As they were nearing the end of their set, they asked the crowd if someone had floor space for them to crash for the night.  Bionca and I started off by joking about it, and then we talked about it more seriously.  We decided that we would offer our guest room to them.  I went to the stand where they were selling t-shirts, CDs, and their comic books, and gave Jeff my phone number and we went back to the show.

PUSA put on a great show.  They played a mixture of old and new stuff, which was great.  I sang along with the stuff that I knew and listened and enjoyed the stuff that I didn’t.  It would have been better if we could have been in a better location to see, since John and Dana didn’t have a great view, but John doesn’t like crowds, so we didn’t go closer.  The show was definately worth the money (if we would have had to pay it) despite only being 45 minutes long.

After the show, we heard from Jeff and the guys and we gave them directions to our place.  They had to get things packed up, which worked well, since it gave Bionca and I time to clean up the apartment.  It was quite a frantic rush.  Bionca was really cute as she was both excited and stressed since she wanted the place to be ready for them in time.  They showed up, and we gave introductions.  We didn’t much really.  We just watched TV a bit, and Dave played with Charlotte (she was a bit nervous at first, but she warmed up quickly).  I also helped Jeff scan some sketches that he needed to email.  They were really nice guys, and we really liked them.

The next morning I had to go to work, but Bionca was off.  She had some stuff to do, and after helping to get some breakfast for them, she left them there to relax before their 3 hour drive to their next gig.  When we got home, there was a really nice note from the guys thanking us for the hospitality and the use of the scanner.

It was a nice night.  The concert was a lot of fun, and it was great to meet the guys, and it is always nice to help people out, especially helping people living their dream.
